JoomStew Radio had the opportunity to sit down this week with one of the Lead Developers of the Joomla! project, Andrew Eddie. It's always a great pleasure to speak with Andrew, and today's show was no different.
Joomla will be releasing Joomla 1.7 in the next 30 days, and we got a chance to talk to Andrew about the new release, the changes in the Development Release Cycle, the Framework Separation, Ebay and Microsoft involvement in the Joomla Project and his thoughts on Forks based on Joomla code.
I'd like to take a minute to give special thanks to my co-hosts Dianne Henning and Alice Grevet for all they do to keep this place going. Without them, we wouldn't have a show and I'd be off doing something else by now. Thanks Ladies.
As always, thanks to Andrew for taking the time to share his thoughts with us, it's never a boring show when we get a chance to speak with you.

Introductions
Andrew Eddie - Tell us who you are, where you’re from and what you do please?
Topic Discussion
- Joomla 1.7 Release - What can we expect from the new Joomla 1.7 release due July 10th? It seems the community has stepped up to add features to this release, instead of relying solely on what we’ve called ‘core’ developers in the past. Is that the case?
- New Developers Release Cycle - Most of the Joomla Community understands the concept of 6 month Short Term releases and a Long Term Release every 18 Months, although my clients are still a bit baffled by it. But this will be our first true 6 month release, with 1.7. Can you talk about who is leading the release and does it seem like the ‘new’ way of doing things is working?
- Joomla Platform - Can you tell us about the Framework separation that went into this release? Will it be a separate download? Will Joomla still work?
- What is the Framework exactly, and what does it do? Is this something where community members can get involved? If so, how?
- Ebay and Microsoft both have become more supportive of Joomla through sponsorship of JoomlaDays and other events, and both have signed a Joomla Contributors Agreement in recent months. Do you see this as a positive move for the Joomla Project? Is there anything we should be mindful of, having such big corporate entities so closely involved in the project?
- Let’s take a stab at forks. There is a growing number of Joomla-dependent or Joomla-related applications, but no one has called theirs a fork. What’s your position on forking the code of an open source project like Joomla?
Working in the Community
- Following this interview here is the developer link on how you can get started: http://developer.joomla.org/getting-started.html
- Check out the Help Wanted topic in the forum: http://forum.joomla.org/viewforum.php?f=681 For example, if you would like to help on the bug squad, you don’t necessarily have to be a programmer. You can help track issues, test some proposed bug fixes. You need to be reasonably familiar with using Joomla and willing to learn new skills.
- There is a full list of involvement entry points listed on the June JCM editorial page, http://magazine.joomla.org
- The JCM deadline is June 23rd for the July issue! We welcome your articles!
